Key Takeaways
The Tailfin Journey Rack is not a classic bike rack, but a premium modular carrying system for modern bicycles. After several months of intensive use, it stands out above all for its extremely high-quality construction, rock-solid stability, and versatile range of applications.

My highlights

  • Very high-quality finish made of anodised aluminium
  • Extremely stable and rattle-free seating
  • Quick assembly and disassembly without classic luggage rack eyelets
  • Perfectly matched to the Tailfin panniers
  • Versatile use: everyday, gravel, bikepacking and cycle touring

My points of criticism:

  • The decision between the pannier and non-pannier version is not so easy.
  • The initial setup requires some time and many individual parts must be correctly adjusted.
  • Certain accessory combinations may be limited by the side pannier mounts
  • Currently, a German retailer with local support is still missing.

I'm a big fan of well-thought-out solutions. Especially when it comes to pannier racks, I've used many different systems over the years – from classic touring racks to minimalist bikepacking solutions.

In recent months, I have had the opportunity to Tailfin Journey Pannier Rack including panniers, to test them intensively in everyday life and on tours. I have been testing the system since Early April and in the meantime, has moved into the lower four-figure kilometre range.

Tailfin Pannier Bags 22 Liter

The Journey Rack not only had to prove itself on tours, but above all in everyday life:

  • Shopping with fully laden bags
  • Sporty day tours with extra weight such as a lock and swimwear
  • Gravel sections with a drybag on top as an alternative to the classic "bum rocket"

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to go on multi-day tours yet due to the main cycling season and my work at the shop. However, this is precisely where the Journey Rack, with its modular concept, would likely really come into its own.

Since I wanted to use the luggage rack not only on bikepacking tours but also on a daily basis, I consciously opted for the large 22-litre panniers decided. For many, this is probably an unusual combination with the sporty Tailfin system – but for my intended use, it was exactly right.

My test configuration

The total price for this configuration is approximately 470 €.

At first glance, that sounds like a lot of money. However, when you consider the build quality, the development behind the system, and compare it to high-end solutions from other manufacturers, I find the price to be absolutely fair.

The concept behind the Journey Rack

The principle of the Journey Rack is significantly different from classic luggage racks.

Instead of relying on securely bolted rack eyelets on the frame, the load is primarily taken up by the rear axle. Combined with the quick-release mount on the seatpost, this creates an extremely stable rack system that can be mounted or removed in just a few seconds.

Exactly this is what makes the biggest difference for me in everyday use.

During the week, I often ride my gravel bike without any luggage. Whether I'm commuting to work, heading to the grocery store, or going for a ride, the rack can be mounted in just a few seconds. Once I'm done, it comes off just as quickly.

The longer I used the Journey Rack, the less I saw it as a traditional rear rack and the more I came to think of it as a modular cargo system.

You are not simply buying a bike rack here, but a platform that can be adapted to different types of use – with pannier bags, a rack bag, dry bag, or even cargo cages.

Two variants – with or without pannier mounts

The Journey Rack is available in two base configurations.

The version I tested comes with Pannier Mounts, which are specifically designed for Tailfin's pannier bags. These allow the bags to sit lower on the rack, improving weight distribution while also freeing up more space on the top platform.

Choosing between the two versions isn't as straightforward as it might seem.

For maximum versatility, I would personally choose the Pannier version again without hesitation.

The reason is simple: only this version is compatible with Tailfin's pannier bags, and in my opinion, they are one of the biggest strengths of the entire system. The bags are exceptionally well made, mount incredibly securely, and transform the Journey Rack into a highly capable setup for both everyday commuting and long-distance touring.

If your goal is a lightweight setup using a Tailfin 10L AeroPack/Speed Pack or another rack bag, it's worth considering the version without Pannier Mounts. It saves around 160 grams, bringing the rack weight down to just 580 g. Instead of the rubber-coated rack legs, this version features additional threaded mounting points on each side for accessories or optional side mounts.

If you already own panniers from brands such as Ortlieb, VAUDE, or other manufacturers, you don't necessarily need Tailfin's dedicated Pannier Mounts. In that case, the Non-Pannier version is also worth considering. It's around €45 cheaper, lighter, and the additional mounting points make it a little more flexible for alternative setups.

The Universal Thru Axle Kit – Buy once and have peace of mind

One feature I particularly like is the Universal Thru Axle Kit.

Instead of having to figure out the correct axle length and thread pitch for your bike, Tailfin offers a comprehensive solution that covers almost every thru-axle standard. It takes the guesswork out of the process and makes finding the right axle remarkably straightforward.

Universal Thru Axle Kit

Depending on your bike, additional adapters may be required, for example when using SRAM Full Mount or UDH dropout standards.

The key requirement for the Tailfin system is that the M12 thread on the drivetrain side must be fully accessible so the axle can pass through and thread in correctly.

Some frames use locknuts or proprietary dropout hardware that can interfere with this. Fortunately, this wasn't an issue on my Merida Silex, where the system fitted perfectly without any additional modifications.

Installation – Premium Quality and Surprisingly Straightforward

For the initial setup, you should allow around 20–30 minutes. 20 bis 30 Minuten einplanen.

That may sound like a bit of work, but the installation process is actually surprisingly enjoyable.

Every component feels exceptionally well made, the instructions are clear and easy to follow, and everything fits together with impressive precision.

There are no flimsy plastic parts or wobbly connections anywhere in the system.

This is exactly the level of quality you would expect from premium cycling components.

Engineering down to the smallest detail

The real highlights are hidden in the small details.

I was particularly impressed by the new Quick-Release Dropouts, which securely fix the rack to the axle.

The quick-release seat post mount is another well-executed detail.

Both connection points operate smoothly, can be released within seconds, and at the same time provide an excellent sense of security.

Even on rough forest trails or fast gravel descents, I never had the feeling that anything was coming loose.

Even after several months of use, there is:

  • no rattling
  • no noise
  • no visible signs of wear

I have also removed the rack itself several times by now. After a few repetitions, mounting and removing it becomes a very quick and straightforward process. In the event of a puncture, the rear wheel can also be removed and reinstalled quickly.

Universal Thru Axle Kit

Modular down to the smallest detail

Another major advantage is the impressive level of modularity.

The package already includes an action camera mount that can be attached to the rack.

A variety of light mounts can then be attached to it:

  • Universal mount
  • Cateye Adapter
  • Exposure Lights Adapter

These adapters do need to be purchased separately, but they offer almost every mounting option you could possibly need.

Das System is also designed to be fully serviceable. If a component is ever damaged after many years of use, there is no need to replace the entire rack. Many components can be replaced individually.

The surface finish has also been improved. Instead of a painted coating, Tailfin uses an anodized finish on the Journey Rack, which is designed to be more resistant to abrasion from bags or straps.

Especially for a rack that is intended to be used for many years, this is a meaningful improvement.

For travelling, it is also worth mentioning that the Journey Rack can be folded almost completely flat. This means it takes up significantly less space in a bike case or suitcase compared to traditional racks.

The mudguard is more than just an accessory

To be honest, I almost decided not to use the optional mudguard.

However, after the first few rides, I no longer wanted to be without it.

It integrates perfectly into the design of the rack, can be adjusted in angle, and even gives the entire system an even sportier look.

Of course, it also provides reliable protection against water spray.

Tailfin Journey Pannier Rack

Not the lightest Tailfin rack – but probably the most versatile

The Journey Rack is not the lightest rack in Tailfin’s range.

However, in return, you get an extremely robust and versatile system.

Especially for riders who want to use their rack for both the daily commute and longer trips, this is probably the most balanced solution in the entire Tailfin range.

The new 22-litre panniers on a practical test

The new pannier bags also leave an excellent impression.

The materials, craftsmanship, and overall feel are at an absolute premium level.

Mounting

Compared to the well-known Ortlieb Quick-Lock system, attaching the bags takes a little more time.

The lower hook needs to be pushed over the rubberized rack leg with some force to ensure the bag sits correctly and the locking lever can be closed properly.

This requires a little practice at first.

However, once the bag is properly locked in place, it feels exceptionally secure.

During my test rides, there was no rattling or movement whatsoever – even on rough gravel surfaces.

This clearly shows that Tailfin has focused more on maximum stability than on making the bags as quick and easy to attach and remove as possible.

Riding performance

I was particularly impressed by how neutral the bike feels to ride despite the large 22-litre panniers.

The bags sit low and the centre of gravity remains close to the rear axle. As a result, the bike remains very stable and controlled even when fully loaded.

Especially on gravel, through fast corners, or at higher speeds, the system inspires a great deal of confidence.

The key improvements of the new generation

Tailfin has extensively redesigned its previous 22-litre pannier bags:

  • New hybrid internal frame made from aluminium and HDPE for increased stability
  • New second-generation X-Clamp system
  • Improved external compression system
  • White inner lining for better visibility and organisation
  • Optional laptop sleeve for devices up to 16 inches
  • New comfortable shoulder strap

The new internal frame in particular helps the bag maintain its shape better, even when fully loaded.

Everyday test – exactly what it was made for

For me, the greatest strength of the Journey Rack is that it is not just a touring rack.

It works just as well for everyday use as it does on longer trips.

Whether it is a fully loaded grocery run, sports equipment, or extra gear for a day trip – the 22-litre panniers provide exactly the amount of space I regularly need.

It is this combination of everyday practicality and adventure capability that makes the system particularly appealing to me.

Mountain bike compatibility

For mountain bikers, the Tri-Pivot construction is particularly interesting.

It allows the rack to follow the movement of the rear suspension on many full-suspension mountain bikes.

With this feature, Tailfin significantly expands the range of applications beyond gravel and touring bikes.

Minor restrictions

Of course, the Journey Rack is not perfect either.

The initial setup requires a bit of patience. Due to the many adjustment options, there are also numerous bolts, adapters, and individual components involved. You will also need to switch between different Allen key sizes quite often, so it is worth taking your time during the first installation.

Once the system has been properly adjusted, however, this is no longer an issue.

Attaching the panniers also requires some care. First, you need to select the correct bag for each side. The lower hook then has to be pushed firmly onto the rack leg before the bag can be positioned correctly at the top and locked into place. In everyday use, this takes a little more time than with some other pannier systems – but it is rewarded with an exceptionally secure and rattle-free fit.

Another point concerns the lateral mounting points. Due to the design of the Pannier Mounts, some accessory combinations may be limited. So far, I have not noticed any real restrictions, but riders who want to combine many different cargo solutions should check their setup beforehand.

The Tailfin cosmos is addictive

The biggest downside of the system is almost a luxury problem for me.

Once you have started using Tailfin, you quickly want to expand the system further.

I would now like to add even more Tailfin products to my setup. Unfortunately, there is currently no German retailer available.

  • Shipping from the UK with customs and import considerations
  • Longer processes for warranty claims and returns
  • No German-language support
  • Occasionally longer delivery times for specific configurations

Especially for a premium system in this price range, having a direct point of contact in Germany would be a significant added value.

Perhaps this will change in the future – as Bike-Packing Shop, we would certainly be happy to make Tailfin even more accessible to German customers.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Tailfin Journey Rack

Does the Tailfin Journey Rack fit every gravel bike?

The Journey Rack fits many gravel bikes, road bikes, and mountain bikes. For the thru-axle version, the requirement is that the Tailfin axle can be installed and that there is sufficient space for the M12 thread.

Which pannier bags can I use with the Tailfin Journey Rack?

The best combination is to use the rack with Tailfin pannier bags. Classic panniers from other manufacturers also work, but you should choose the appropriate rack version.

Which version should I buy?

For maximum versatility, we recommend the version with Pannier Mounts. If you only want to ride light and fast with a Speedpack or Rack Bag, you can save weight and choose the Non-Pannier version instead.

Is the Tailfin Journey Rack suitable for bikepacking?

Yes. Thanks to its modular design, it is perfectly suited for bikepacking, gravel adventures, everyday use, and long-distance touring.

Would I buy the Tailfin Journey Rack again?

Yes.

After several months of use, the biggest strength for me is its versatility. I can use it for a quick grocery trip in the morning, ride a gravel adventure with a dry bag at the weekend, and later set off on a longer tour with the same system.

My conclusion after several months

After several months of use, I no longer see the Journey Rack as a pure bikepacking rack.

Instead, it is an extremely versatile rack system for anyone who uses their bike in a wide variety of situations.

Whether it is daily commuting, grocery shopping, an overnighter, an ultra race, or a multi-week cycling adventure – the Journey Rack handles all of these scenarios with ease.

For my mix of everyday use and touring, I would choose the 22-litre panniers again. For longer trips, I would expand the setup with a Tailfin Speedbag on top and the smaller 5-litre panniers.

This is exactly where the strength of the system becomes clear: you can start with a small setup and expand it later depending on your needs.

  • Extremely high-quality workmanship
  • Completely play-free fit
  • A very well-thought-out accessory system
  • Fast installation and removal
  • Excellent everyday practicality
  • Versatile range of applications
  • Fully modular design

My only real criticism remains the slightly more complicated process of attaching and removing the pannier bags.

However, once they are mounted, they sit so securely and rattle-free on the rack that I have rarely experienced anything comparable with other systems.

My rating after several months of continuous use: 9 out of 10 points.
